Postgraduate applications

About the PhD programme

The Ciência sem Fronteiras programme offers two routes for postgraduate students to study in the UK.  Students currently studying for a PhD in Brazil can apply to spend 6-12 months at a UK university as part of a 'sandwich PhD'.  Alternatively students can apply to study for a full PhD at a UK university for 3-4 years.

Hear from other CsF PhD scholars

We believe CsF UK PhD scholars will have a fantastic time in the UK - here is what other PhD students have said about their experiences:

"The UK has one of the largest, best qualified and renowned academic centres in the World and it definitely weighted heavily in my decision to come to study at Lancaster University. Apart from the high quality education I am receiving, I am making friends with people with different background and from all over the world, sharing knowledge, experiences, foods, feelings! I am having an amazing time and I am sure that everything I have been learning here in class and in daily life will be essential in my career." Bruno de Abreu Iizuka Moritani, PhD student, the University of Lancaster

"The Brazilian government looks after the CsF students through Ciência sem Fronteiras UK (CsF UK). The agency was essential for the success of my year in the United Kingdom as a PhD student of the Ciência sem Fronteiras (CsF) program. CsF  UK helped me in every step I took in the program, from documentation to accommodation. Furthermore, CsF UK was a link which improved the communication between Newcastle University, Brazilian government, my supervisor and me. I am grateful for the support I received" Geisilaine Soares dos Reis, Sandwich PhD student at Newcastle University, from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

"When I found out about the CsF program, I decided that I wanted to study somewhere with innovative research, with English as the native language and with a great cultural background. The United Kingdom is recognised globally for the quality of its universities, making it the perfect choice. This one year period will definitely be of great benefit to my research career, as the knowledge and technical support needed to develop my thesis has been readily available. Aberystwyth is a charming city with great people. I could not have chosen a better place to come." Rodolpho Prado, Sandwich PhD student, Aberystwyth University

"I chose the UK because of the improvements it would provide to my English skills and its historical railway passenger transport systems, which is my research field and the Institute for Transport Studies in Leeds has a high quality experienced academic staff. The city has a wide range of cultural and social events within and outside the campus, and the citizens always warmly welcome every student and are able to integrate everybody in an enjoyable environment". Cassiano Isler, Sandwich PhD student, University of Leeds
